Your Baby Chiropractor and You

Congratulations on welcoming a new life, your new baby into this world. Observing your baby’s growth from two cells, to their journey through the birthing process, to the gorgeous baby you are holding in your arms today, you cannot help but appreciate the miracle of life.

As parents we want the best for our babies. We would like to see them move and grow optimally - physically, socially, emotionally and mentally.

The first year of life is a time of rapid growth and development. Your babies brain will double in size, their spine will lengthen by approximately 50%, their spinal curves will develop, and they will attain many developmental milestones including learning to roll, crawl, sit up, eat solid foods and so on.. during this first year.

A environment where their basic needs are met, that is rich with love and appropriate sensory stimulation, and a well functioning  nervous system will enhance their development. Did you know that the nervous system is the first organ system to develop in utero, and it then goes on to direct the development of the rest of the body? After birth, the nervous system continues to direct and control growth and all functions of the body.

What does a Baby Chiropractor do?
Chiropractor’s assess your baby’s hips, spine and cranial-dural system for imbalances. These may occur through birth, bumps, falls or other stresses.  A Baby Chiropractor also assesses how well you baby’s nervous system is functioning, for example,  are your baby’s primitive reflexes appropriately integrating, pathing the way for their postural reflexes to come online.

If chiropractic care is indicated, (through a thorough history and examination process), after a discussion with and consent obtained from the parents, chiropractic are may be offered. Chiropractic care may involve specific corrections to the skull, spine or other joints of the body and nervous system, soft tissue releases, and may also include recommendations on home exercises or modifications to activities to support optimal function.

Why consult a Baby Chiropractor?

Parents will take their baby to a Baby Chiropractor for a multitude of reasons, some of the more common reasons include concerns that their baby:
  • is unsettled and crying a lot
  • likes to hold their head off to one side
  • is developing a flat spot on the back of their head
  • appears to be taking longer than expected to reach certain developmental milestones
  • appears to be uncomfortable in certain positions or certain movements for example in a car seat or a baby carrier, having their nappy changed, or having clothes taken off over their head

Even when all seems on track, many parents choose to have their baby checked for health and development.

If you think your baby might benefit from a chiropractic assessment, but are unsure, please contact us for a complimentary chat with one of our Chiropractors.
